OCR: 1908 ] Although Canadians had participated in the Olympic games as individuals before, it was only in 1908 that Canada sent its first national team, of 84 athletes, to the games in London, England. All the athletes sported a red maple leaf on their uniforms. According to the London Times: "The bearers of the red maple leaf have shown throughout these games a dogged pluck and a cheerfulness in the face of disappointment, which the representatives of none of the other nations have surpassed." National Anthem Although popular in Quebec, "O Canada" was not heard in English Canada until the first decade of the twentieth century. A number of English translations were attempted, but the one most widely used today was composed by Robert Stanley Weir, a Montreal lawyer and amateur poet.
